Voice Direct™ II Speech Recognition System

Downloadable Data Sheet

The Voice Direct™ II Speech Recognition Kit is Sensory's entry-level product for testing and experimenting with speech recognition concepts. Low-cost and easy to use, the Voice Direct II SRK is a fun and easy way to integrate basic speech recognition into just about any electronic project imaginable.

Voice Direct™ II is a speaker-dependent speech recognition module, allowing training of up to 60 words in 4 pin-configurable modes. Using sophisticated speech recognition technology; Voice Direct™ II maps spoken commands to system control functions. Each time one of the words is recognized, output pins on the module are toggled high for 1 second. With proper use greater than 99% recognition accuracy can be achieved.

·                Minimal External Components

·                Recognizes up to 60 words or phrases

·                Over 99% recognition accuracy

·                Phrase recognition up to 2.5 seconds

·                User-friendly speech prompting

·                Quick set-up time

For a more advanced speech recognition-programming environment check out the Voice Extreme Toolkit. Additional technologies and a stand-alone microcontroller make this an ideal choice for further experimentation with intermediate speech recognition concepts.

Speech Recognition VE Toolkit

Voice Extreme Toolkit™

The Voice Extreme Toolkit™ consists of a programmable module, development board and suite of development software for building interactive speech applications quickly and easily. Using a highly integrated, low cost chip, developers can write programs in VE-C, a high-level language very similar to ANSI-C.

VE-C provides access to numerous voice and audio technologies, in addition to hardware features such as I/O ports, timers and an RS-232 interface.

Applications Include:

·                Robotics See our Example here

·                Consumer Electronics

·                Security Products

·                Home and Industrial

·                Disabled Devices

·                Education

How does it work?

A Voice Extreme™ application consists of a program file plus any data files it needs, linked together into a binary image file that can be downloaded to a 2Mbit flash memory. This program is then executed by the Voice Extreme™ interpreter, which runs in ROM on the VE IC. Because the VE IC has speech processing technology code already in firmware, application code is compact and executes quickly.

Kit contains:

·                Voice Extreme™ Development Board with built-in microphone and speaker

·                Voice Extreme™ Module

·                Power supply

·                Serial cable for PC RS-232 connection

·                Quick Start Guide

Software CD containing:

·                Voice Extreme™ IDE

·                Quick Synthesis™

·                Sample projects and data

·                Documentation

System Requirements:

·                Windows (95/98/ME/NT/2000)

·                16MB RAM

·                15MB free hard disk space

·                RS-232 port

Creating a VE application is easy!

1. Write your program using the VE IDE
2. Download over RS-232 to the VE module
3. Run the program directly on the module!

The Voice Extreme Module can then removed from the development board and wired into your application. In circuit programming is also supported.

Speech Recognition Example

Prototype: Voice Activated Robot One

Pictured below is our prototype VAR1, shown is the underside of the chassis. This robot responds to ten spoken commands and is fully speaker independent.

Spoken Command

Action Carried Out

"Forward" or "Go"

Acknowledges command by repeating, "off we go", then moves forward at a constant speed.

"Reverse" or "Backup"

Acknowledges command by repeating, "gone too far this time", then reverses at a constant speed.

"Left"

Acknowledges command by repeating, "turning left", and then carries out a soft 90-degree left turn.

"Right"

Acknowledges command by repeating, "right you are", and then carries out a soft 90-degree right turn.

"Turn"

Acknowledges command by repeating, "turning round", and then carries out a sharp 180-degree turn.

"Rover"

Carries out a pre-defined movement routine while playing the tune "I did it my way".

"Exit" or "halt"

Halts program execution and brings the vehicle to a stop.

(1) Accessories - Speech Recognition

Voice Extreme™ Module

The Voice Extreme™ Module (VE) simplifies the design of speech recognition products by integrating all key components onto a single board. A low-noise audio channel and convenient connectors allow rapid prototyping, less debugging and shorter time to market.

Using the Voice Extreme Toolkit™, programs can be downloaded into the VE Module. Modules can then be unplugged from the Development Board and wired directly into the final product. In-circuit reprogramming is also supported.

Through the 34-pin connector, the module offers 11 I/O lines, as well as connections for power, microphone, speaker and logic-level RS232 interface.

Voice Extreme™ supports all of these Sensory Speech™ 6 technologies:

·                Speaker Independent: no training required

·                Speaker Dependent: custom commands

·                Speaker Verification: voice password

·                Continuous Listening: gateway access

·                Word Spotting: identifies a phrase out of a sentence

·                Speech Synthesis: custom prompts

·                Record & Playback

·                Music2: 4-voice, midi-style

·                DTMF generation: touch tone dialling

Applications:

·                Consumer Electronics

·                Security Products

·                Home and Industrial

·                Robotics

·                Toys and Games

·                Devices for the Disabled

·                Education

(2) Accessories - Speech Recognition

Voice Extreme™ IDE

The Voice Extreme™ IDE is the development environment used for creating VE-C applications. Features Include:

·                Editor with source-level debug

·                Project Management and Project Editing

·                Single button builder that parses, assembles, links and checks the project

·                Syntax colouring, macro generation, bookmarks, line reminders and other utilities

·                Integrated batch-mode device programmer

(3) Accessories - Speech Recognition

Quick Synthesis™

The Sensory Quick Synthesis™ tool is designed to help create and manage speech synthesis for Voice Extreme and other Sensory RSC microcontroller applications.

Now any .wav file can be converted into a file format compatible with the Voice Extreme IC and other Sensory speech processors. This process can be done quickly and without the use of a Sensory linguist.
